GMIT Students’ Union brings Christmas early through the #SUHEROES campaign

Christmas came early for hundreds of children around Galway this year thanks to GMIT Students’ Union. This year the SU ran a #SUHEROES campaign centred on fundraising and the collection of new toys for underprivileged families and sick children in hospital.

The toys will be distributed through the Saint Vincent De Paul and will also be given to sick children in UCHG over the Christmas period. The campaign started in December with the Students’ Union encouraging students to run their own events and fundraisers. Over 500 brand new toys were collected along with a brand new XBOX One being donated to the UCHG Paediatric ward.

Speaking as the toys were delivered at the weekend, SU President Sam O’Neill said “We have been delighted with the success of the campaign and overwhelmed by the goodwill and generosity of the staff, students, businesses and local community for these great causes.”

He went on to say “The hard work put into the campaign by the SU team was worthwhile when you see the smiles on the kids’ faces in the Hospital. I would like to thank all the people and businesses that donated, you really are SU HEROES.”
