Tuam to host national cross country event

Tuam will host National Cross Country Championships next February - the first time since 1999 a national event has been held in County Galway.

Athletics Ireland has announced that the All Ireland Juvenile Development, Masters, and Intermediates cross country championships will be held in the Palace Grounds on February 8 2015, with a full programme of 12 events.

Galway has a proud track record in these events, including former intermediate winners Gary Thornton, Orla Ni Muircheartaigh and Laura Shaughnessy, while team wins were produced by Galway men in 1978 and 2011. More recently Galway women’s team won gold in 2012, while at masters level Peter O Sullivan and Martin McEvilly have won individual medals.

 Full details and a detailed programme will be announced in due course.

Ballinderreen 10km

The  Ballinderreen 10km took place on Sunday with nearly 150 athletes taking to the start line in perfect conditions. Matt Bidwell of Galway City Harriers belied his veteran status, winning yet another local road race in some style and in a personal best time of 31.42. He was followed home by Colm Turner of Limerick AC and John Greaney of GCH in second and third respectively in 33.27 and 33.33.

Novice cross country bronze medal winner Barbara Dunne of GCH once again proved her class winning the ladies; section in 39.20, but she was pushed all the way by clubmate Siobhan Egan who finished in 39.32. Sinead Brody of GCH was third home .
