Galway WFC will look for the perfect finish to 2014 when they host champions RahenyUnited on Sunday in Eamonn Deacy Park.
It will be a tough ask, but their recent good form continued last weekend when they held ContinentalTyres WNL leaders Wexford Youths to a scoreless draw.
Wexford had travelled to the west with high hopes having defeated UCD Waves in the League Cup midweek, but Galway had other ideas. But in a game when chances were created, neither side was able to finish to the net.
The opening half saw both defences on top cancel, with most of the play in the middle third of the field and few clear-cut chances.
Galway created their best chance in the 40th minute when a Marie Curtin shot went narrowly wide at the far post, while Lynsey McKey’s thunderous shot on 53 minutes went just to the left of the Wexford net.
The visitors also had their chances. When Carol Breen was taken down on the edge of the Galway box, Kylie Murphy’s resultant free cleared the crossbar before a Marie Curtin free kick from just inside the opposition half was allowed bounce in the box and nearly saw Galway go one up.
Galway keeper Tina Hughes was forced to pull off a wonderful save from another Breen effort, while at the other end McKey found herself one-on-one with Wexford keeper Mary Rose Kelly, but she could not find the net. The final action came in the 91st minute when Breen tried to round Hughes, but the Youths player could not keep her feet and the ball went harmlessly wide.
Despite a frantic final 10 minutes both sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.
