Fr Michael Griffin commemoration this Sunday

The annual commemoration in honour of Fr Michael Griffin, a Galway priest abducted and killed by British forces during the War of Independence, takes place in Barna this Sunday.

A Mass in memory of Fr Griffin will be celebrated in Barna church at 12 noon. Afterwards there will be a wreath laying ceremony at the monument which marks the spot where Fr Griffin’s body was found on November 20 1920.

As part of the commemoration, Galway historian Cormac Ó Comhraí will give a brief address on the effect that the murder of Fr Griffin had on the independence movement.

Mr Ó Comhraí contributes regularly to TG4 and Raidió na Gaeltachta documentaries. He is the author of Revolution in Connacht, Ireland and The First World War, and co-editor of The Men Will Talk To Me: Galway Interviews by Ernie O’Malley
