GRAVITY DEFYING trapeze acts, red nose slapstick, poetry, Hula-Hoops, juggling, and breath-taking acrobatics will collide in a show by a pair of performers The Irish Times said are “turning the circus tradition upside down”.
International award-winning, Irish-based circus company Tumble Circus are bringing their critically acclaimed show, Damn The Circus to the Black Box Theatre, Dyle Road, on Friday November 21 and Saturday 22 as part of a nationwide tour.
The show will be performed by Ken Fanning, Tina Segner, and Ursula Burns. It is directed by Helen Statman and Nordine Allal. To get an idea of what they do, check out this video of the company in action:
Tumble Circus is Irishman Ken Fanning and Swede Tina Segner. They met in 1997 when Tina was backpacking and bumped into Ken doing street shows on Grafton Street. They subsequently fell in love, went to circus school, formed Tumble Circus in 1998, fell out of love, yet continued to work together, remaining firm friends. They are now based in Belfast.
In a display of commitment to her craft, Tina, now a mum to baby Kasper, performed until the day before giving birth earlier this year and returned performing only six weeks after.
For Damn The Circus, the duo will be joined by harpist and comedic songwriter Ursula Burns, winner of the 2012 Irish Musical Comedy Awards. She was also nominated for the 2013 Malcolm Hardee Award for Comedic Originality at the Edinburgh Fringe, previous winners include The Rubberbandits in 2012.
Tumble Circus have enjoyed great acclaim for their work. Entertainment.ie said their shows were “filled with grace, eloquence and strength…hypnotic, sweet and very,very funny”; West Australian praised their “pitch perfect performances. Very impressive circus skills”; while Belfast Festival of Queens described Fanning and Segner as “refreshing and unique”.
