Labour Senator Lorraine Higgins has welcomed news that approximately 31,344 families in Galway are set to benefit from an increase in child benefit being introduced in the Dáil this week.
She was speaking as the Social Welfare Bill containing the measure was introduced this week by Tánaiste Joan Burton.
“31,344 families in Galway are to receive a top-up to their child benefit, with €135 to be paid for each child from January 2015. This will be worth an extra €60 per child annually, and will benefit a total of 61,929 children in Galway.
“In the run-up to the recent Budget, Tánaiste Joan Burton and the Labour Ministers made it clear they were intent on providing some relief for working families around the country.
“I am glad that they have made good on that commitment, and the child benefit increase will particularly benefit low and middle income families.
“I look forward to families throughout Galway enjoying the benefit in their pockets in the months to come,” she said.
