Connacht championship crown beckons for Killanin on Sunday in Tuam

Galway’s intermediate football champions Killanin will face St Croans (Roscommon ) on Sunday in Tuam Stadium (2pm ) in the Connacht championship decider.

Team captain Marvin Lee is hopeful the team can finish off the year with an historic provincial title.

"It has been a fantastic year as regards football for all of us on the panel and there is a terrific bond within the group at this stage. Winning brings a squad closer and there is a great comraderie between all the lads on the panel and the management team and the club at large," he says.

"All of us have been working very hard at training, and collectively and individually we want to produce a winning performance this Sunday. We have had tremendous support from the entire community over the past few months and we had marvellous support at the Calry/St Joseph’s game too, so hopefully we will have all those supporters back again this Sunday and we can give them something to cheer about."

Lee says the day final will be a special occasion with the Aran Islands also in action.

"The fact that the Aran Islands are playing in the junior final before us only adds to the occasion and no doubt both sets of Galway supporters will cheer on each both teams.

“Thankfully we have no injury concerns and everyone is chomping at the bit to get into action. We have some very good players on our team and on the bench and it could take a 20-man effort on Sunday to get us over the end-line."

Lee knows that St Croans, who beat a fancied Ballyhaunis in their semi-final, will be a different proposition than Calry/St Joeseph’s.

"St Croans have a few Roscommon u-21s in their squad and Fergal O'Donnell, former Roscommon manager, has been helping them out over the past few weeks too so they will be well prepared.

“We will have to produce a top class performance to beat them, but we are confident we are going well and we are looking forward to getting back to Tuam Stadium for another championship game."

Assuming the likes of Patrick Sweeney, Cathal Sweeney, Niall Walsh, Enda Kelly and Stephen Kavanagh can maintain their exciting attacking play, allied to raiding wing-backs Johnny Heaney and Ruairí Greene, it is plausible to suggest that Killanin could hit a match-winning tally.

It has the makings of a tight game, but based on the displays by the Connemara team in the second half against Moycullen in the county final, and against the Sligo champions in the semi-final, their supporters will be heading to Tuam on Sunday with a fair dash of confidence and belief in their team.
