A 30km speed limit should be enforced in all residential areas throughout Galway city, a motion set to come before the next meeting of the Galway City Council will demand.
Fine Gael Galway West councillor Pearce Flannery has submitted the motion seeking a speed limit reduction in “all residential areas excluding arterial routes within the city boundaries”.
The motion is on the agenda for the Monday November 3 meeting and is in response to a recent road fatality. Cllr Flannery is calling on his fellow elected members to support his call for what he argues is “an urgent need to prioritise pedestrian, cyclist, and general road safety within the confines” of Galway city.
“I am hopeful this will be passed without any dissent at council,” he said. “It is solely focused the common good. I sincerely hope we do not have to discuss this again in the light of a tragedy due to our inability to legislate for an issue such as this.”
