Oughterard school celebrates book festival with new library

Oughterard celebrated National Children’s Book Month with the opening of its new library in Scoil Chuimín agus Caitríona on Monday.

The newly-appointed Galway Senior football manager, Kevin Walsh, who performed the opening, said although sports psychology was his current reading area of interest, books could help students decide what path they might take in life.

Walsh also revealed that his appearance in the recent Galway Intermediate Football final for his club Killannin was unplanned, but that “circumstances of the game” had dictated otherwise.

The school library was opened as part of a Reading Festival where book authors and writers visited the school to read stories and answer questions about the art of writing.

The new library uses a software package that will track the books the pupils have read over their time in the school. Pupils from fifth class will assist in the running of the library.
