Current All-Ireland club hurling and Galway county champions Portumna proved too good for Craughwell on Sunday in Kenny Park, qualifying for yet another county final with a three point victory (1-15 to 0-15 ).
An opening-minute goal from Joe Canning proved decisive, easing the champions into a 1-1 to 0-0 lead after Kevin Hayes had opened their account.
Craughwell were left to wonder how they would have fared if the injured Niall Healy had been at their disposal as they were wayward up front and shot 19 wides over the hour - some of them from good scoring positions.
The men with Al Hayes Motors on their chests were five points up at half time, 1-8 to 0-6, with Joe Canning hitting 1-4, and the Shannonsiders did enough to advance to their ninth SHC in 12 years and aiming for their seventh county senior title since 2003.
However, they are likely to have a long delay before their next championship game. With the shenanigans going on in the other side of the draw, it is difficult to say when the 2014 county final will be played at this juncture.
