Films from opposite ends of the Mediterranean

MOHAMAD MALAS’S first film in almost a decade and a French film about an actor coming out of retirement will be screened in Galway this weekend.

The Galway Film Society’s Films From The Southern Mediterranean strand, in association with Access Cinema, continues this Sunday at the Town Hall Theatre.

Syrian film, Ladder To Damascus (5.30pm ) follows Ghalia, who believes the soul of Zeina, a girl who drowned the day she was born, dwells inside her. Ghalia travels to Damascus to study acting. There she meets an aspiring filmmaker, but the erupting civil war threatens their budding romance.

French film Cycling With Moliere (8pm ) sees Serge (Fabrice Luchini ) retire from show business to live in a picturesque coastal village. Then along comes Gauthier (Lambert Wilson ), a popular TV actor, who offers Serge a role in Moliere’s The Misanthrope. Will Serge return to acting? If he does, will he stick out the rehearsals? The film won the Audience Award at the Sarasota Film Festival 2014.
