National teaching awards for four Galway lecturers

Four Galway lecturers — two from GMIT and two from NUI Galway — have been honoured for their work at the inaugural Teaching Hero Awards.

Dr Deirdre Curran of NUI Galway’s School of Business and Economics and Whitaker Institute, and Dr Mark Lang of the university’s School of Physics, received awards along with John Carty, who lectures in marketing, management, and public relations in the GMIT College of Tourism & Arts, and Richie Hoare, a senior lecturer in accountancy in the GMIT School of Business.

The Teaching Hero Awards were established by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, in partnership with the Union of Students in Ireland and other student bodies to recognise and celebrate students’ experiences of great teaching in the country’s higher education institutions. The winners were chosen from nominations by students.

A total of 53 teachers from 27 higher education institutions were honoured at an awards ceremony in Dublin Castle last week.
