GIRL BAND despite their name, have no female members. Musically, these avant/noise-punks are very much a case of 'take risks but take no prisoners' with a sound that is as uncomprimising as it is aggressive. Galway audiences will be left in no doubt of any of this when they play Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh tomorrow (October 9 ) at 9pm.
The band - Dara Kiely, Alan Duggan, Daniel Fox, and Adam Faulkner - take their inspiration from Bad Brains, Swell Maps, James Chance & The Contortions, NEU!, The Birthday Party, minimal techo, and Beat Happening. They also like to play around with song length. Their ‘Lawman’ single, released earlier this year clocked in at seven minutes.
The follow-up was the 24 second ‘The Cha Cha Cha’, where the Swell Maps influence is at it's most obvious. By contrast the B-side was an eight minute electro-pulse workout, also called ‘The Cha Cha Cha’
The quartet’s most recent single, the abrasive, aggressive ‘De Bom Bom’ clocks in at a more traditional three-minutes.
The band also enjoy critical acclaim. The Quietus said: "Gaze on Alan Duggan’s guitar clunks in satisfyingly crisp black and white clarity, while Dara Kiely’s madness-just-contained vocal turn gets rendered in quadruple vision."
