An initiative to combat suicide, alcohol addiction, and depression among young people in Galway launches on Friday October 10.
The night, entitled Ireland Dance With Larry, is an awareness night for SAD, the new Galway based organisation that aims to tackle the problems of suicide, alcoholism, and depression, as well as effects resulting from previous convictions.
The launch will feature zumba dance with Leighton Morrison, a talk by educationalist John Rabbitte, performances by the Agapeo Choir and Generation NXT, as well as an open mic and other events. It takes place in Maragoini House, Ballybrit Business Park, Monivea Road, from 8pm to 10pm.
The initiative is the brainchild of Leighton Morrison, father of ‘Tiny Dancer’ Lily Mae; the GMIT’s John Rabbitte, and the Faith Christian Fellowship’s Larry Ovie, who is also a counsellor and author.
A large emphasis on the night will be on dance as a means of enjoyment, health, and building self-confidence.
“Dance will reduce stress, make us more fit and healthy, aiding the heart to circulate the blood flow in the body system,” says Larry. “Dancing is a way to liberate the mind and give people confidence in themselves.”
Ireland Dance With Larry will take place on the last Friday of the month and plans to become an ‘alternative night out’. Admission is free. The organisers are also seeking partnership with organisations in order to develop the nights.
