Galway WFC return to Bishopstown Stadium on Sunday for the second week in a row to face Cork City WFC - this time in the Continental Tyres WNL Cup.
Against the same opposition last weekend, Galway dominated possession, but were forced to come from behind twice to salvage a 2-2 draw. Although Galway should relish the chance to have another go at Cork and make up for their miserly performance in front of goal, they will need to up their game in the final third of the field if they are to progress in the League Cup this Sunday.
Last weekend Katie McCarthy opened the scoring for Cork inside 12 minutes with their only shot on goal in the first half. In contrast Galway had eight shots on goal, but had nothing to show for their endeavour at the interval.
The second half started in much the same way that the first ended with Cork City sitting deep and relying on counter attacks, while Galway piled forward in search of an equaliser.
First Kara Mullins shot just wide after Marie Curtin disposessed Katie McCarthy and played a through-ball to the striker, before Lynsey McKey saw a chance trickle wide. Finally Galway were rewarded when Maeve De Burca beat Natalie Coughlan to the ball on the right wing, and her cross found Mullins who hammered into the bottom corner.
Galway continued to pile on the pressure, but Cork had the crossbar to thank for saving them on a couple of occasions. With the game entering the last five minutes, Carson got on the end of a free kick to put Cork into the lead again, against the run of play.
To their credit Galway never gave up and were rewarded in the 89th minute when Marie Curtin stepped up to slot home a penalty after Mullins had been taken down.
