New tennis champions

The annual Galway Lawn Tennius Club Championships produced two first-time champions.

Grainne Coll and Alec Sandys defeated Rita Halloran and Cormac O’Connor respectively at the recent club event which attracted 100 competitors.

Sandys was denied a hat-trick of club titles, having also partnered Al Waterson to doubles victory over Brendan Murtagh and Sean Lange, but he and Jennifer Hegarty were denied by Murtagh and Jane Quirke in the mixed doubles event.

In the Ladies’ B Singles Monica Cuedo defeated Joanne Clancy (another triple finalist ), while Raphael McCarron claimed the Men’s B title with victory over Mikko Siltanein before completing a double over the same opponent partnering Mark Foley against Siltanein and Nils Backer in the B Doubles final. Charles Connolly overcame the challenge of Serghei Caratees in the Men’s C final.

There were some tremendous doubles encounters throughout the event.w Old rivals Helen Lawless and Olivia Deely got the better of Rita Halloran and Marion O Brien in the A final, while Joanne Clancy and Lesley Ann Walsh beat Angela Lawless and Gai Barry in the B final. Joanne Clancy completed a doubles-double by partnering Brendan Daly to victory in the B Mixed event, receiving a walkover in the final against Michael Donadio and Hayley Lough.
