Pádraig Pearse’s cottage in Rosmuc is to be key ‘discovery point’ on the Wild Atlantic Way once the tourist route’s €2 million makeover is completed next year.
The historic cottage, known as Teach an Phiarsaigh, has been earmarked by Fáilte Ireland for redevelopment as a national monument and tourist attraction as part of the 1916 centenary commemorations; and to be a key ‘discovery point’ on the Wild Atlantic Way route.
The cottage was Pearse’s summer residence between 1903 and 1915. It was also as a summer school for his pupils from St Enda’s in Dublin.
Fine Gael Galway West TD Brian Walsh has welcomed the cottage’s inclusion on the Wild Atlantic Way and hopes it will “substantially increase the number of visitors to Rosmuc in the coming years”. He also described the cottage as “an important part of our heritage”.
Teach an Phiarsaigh is also earmarked in Fáilte Ireland’s Connemara Destination Plan and Connemara Driving Tour and is a key component of its strategy to develop the tourism sector in Connemara.
An economic appraisal of the project is complete and a project management and design team has been put in place. Work has commenced and is currently on schedule for 2016.
