New health care centre in Tuam must not ‘sacrifice’ services elsewhere

The new primary health care centre in Tuam must not come at the expense of health and psychiatric services elsewhere in County Galway, a Tuam based TD has warned.

Fianna Fáil Galway East TD Colm Keaveney, while welcoming the new Tuam centre, said it would be “an extremely worrying development”, if it “sacrificed” mental health services in other parts of Galway or was to “camouflage the closure of services such as those on offer in Toghermore”.

Dep Keaveney said the new primary health care centre must be “all-encompassing” and not focus on one area of health.

“There seems to have been a significant lack of real engagement by the HSE with the relevant stakeholders in the set-up and establishment of the centre,” he said. “This is evidenced by the fact that a new ambulance at the site lies idle with no staff. The HSE is not being properly resourced and it will lead to diminished services in Tuam.”

Dep Keaveney wsaid he would be raising the issue with the Health Minister Leo Varadkar this week.
