Thinking of learning to play guitar but find you are always putting it off? Kevin Mc Nicholas, tutor with Guitar Made Easy, would like to dispel a few of the myths that surround learning to play guitar.
Firstly, it’s a skill, not a talent. Nobody is born with musical ability. You don’t need an expensive instrument. You can buy a perfectly good beginner’s guitar for a little over €100. If funds are short, borrow a guitar. You probably know at least three people that could help you out with the loan of an instrument.
It doesn’t require years and years of lessons. With proper practice, you can play half a dozen of your favourite songs within 10 weeks. You don’t have to learn to read music, and you don’t have to sit exams.
Group classes are a lot more fun than one-to-one classes, and you learn just as quickly. While the lower age limit for beginners is somewhere between eight and 10 years old, there is no upper age limit.
There is never a ‘good’ time to begin. Don’t hide behind the excuse that you are just too busy. Nobody ever regrets learning to play a musical instrument.
The 10 week September term of Guitar Made Easy starts in Oranmore on Monday September 22, Galway on Tuesday September 23, Tuam on Wednesday September 24, and Castlebar on Thursday September 25.
Beginners classes are on at 7pm and 8.15 pm, and improvers classes are at 9.30pm in each of the four venues.
