A protest against Irish representation at the forthcoming NATO conference and against the ethos of NATO, takes place in Galway tomorrow.
NATO is convening its annual summit in the Welsh town of Newport today and tomorrow. Although Ireland is not officially a member of NATO it will have representatives in attendance. Since 1999, the State has been represented at NATO HQ through its involvement in the NATO offshoot, the Partnership for Peace.
In protest at this, the Galway Alliance Against War will hold a silent peace vigil from 1pm to 2pm tomorrow along Shop Street.
GAAW spokesperson Niall Farrell said the vigil is being held to “remind people that Ireland should play no part in the warmongering of NATO”. He accused the organisation of “causing the never-ending wars of the 21st century, from the present conflict in the Ukraine to the on-going war in Afghanistan”.
