Efforts to acquire a new school building for Lackagh National School has taken a potential step closer to becoming a reality this week.
The school has moved to ‘Stage 2B’ with the Department of Education, which means it can now seek planning permission and prepare documents for tender. Currently the school has been surviving with prefab accommodation that has become increasingly substandard.
The news has been welcomed by Labour Galway West TD Derek Nolan.
“This signals we are closer than ever to seeing construction of a new building,” he said. “Great credit must go to the principal Michael Lydon and his team who made the best of a difficult situation for far too long and who have brought the project this far.”
Dep Nolan said he will be meeting with the housing Minister Jan O’Sullivan to discuss Lackagh National School and to advocate quick progress on this issue.
