Galway obstetrician/gynaecologist accused of carrying out fertility treatment without patient’s consent

A Medical Council fitness to practise committee has adjourned an inquiry into an allegation that a Galway doctor carried out a fertility procedure without the patient’s consent.

According to reports, Dr Declan Egan, a consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist who practises at University Hospital Galway and runs the Galway Fertility Unit in Rahoon, faces an allegation of poor professional performance.

The inquiry conducted by the Medical Council follows a complaint by the patient, Lorna McKeogh, a sales executive from Mountbellew, Co Galway. It is alleged that Dr Egan performed a clipping of both left and right hydrosalpinges (fallopian tubes ) “in circumstances where this was not consistent with the consent form dated June 2, 2010”. It is further alleged that Dr Egan failed to meet the standards of competance that could reasonably be expected of a consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist. The bilateral tubal ligation was performed on Ms McKeogh, who was 32 at the time, at the Galway Fertility Unit on June 2, 2010.

Proceedings at the Medical Council headquarters in Dublin began earlier this week but was adjourned shortly after to allow additional medical records to be circulated. The records relate to a procedure Ms McKeogh underwent in the Rotunda Hospital last May to have the clipping of her fallopian tubes reversed.

The case is due to resume next January.
