Galway WFC at home to Peamount on Sunday

Galway WFC are in action this weekend in their home season opener against Dublin side Peamont United in Eamonn Deacy Park. Don O’Riordan’s side will be looking to get points on the board after their opening day defeat to UCD Waves last Sunday in Jackson Park.

Galway WFC with debutants Kara Mullins, Megan Kellegher, and Claudia Hudner, started the game dominating territory and possession for the opening quarter of the game but could not get on the scoresheet. The Waves then began to get into the game and 34 minutes on; Galway native Julie Ann Russell found the net against her hometown club with a long range effort to leave the score 1-0 at the break. Ten minutes into the second half Russell popped up again, this time getting her head to a Waves corner. With just over 10 minutes to go, Russell was taken down in the box and Aine O’Gorman stepped up to convert despite Melissa Casserly getting her hand to the strike. Russell then turned from hero to villain, unlucky to be dismissed for picking up her second yellow card of the game with UCD hanging on to a 3-0 victory.

O’Riordan felt that “All three goals we felt were preventable but realistically we gave a very good account of ourselves against the potential champions. The girls’ phenomenal work rate was admired by all. We had three big players missing today, Marie Curtin, Lisa Casserly, and Lynsey McKey, and still gave UCD Waves a good game. We are now looking forward to next Sunday and the visit of Peamount to Eamonn Deacy Park.”

Peamount United are in a rebuilding mode having lost many of their key players during the close season. However they have an excellent underage structure and have been very active in bringing in new players to the club.

The club has also confirmed that Eleanor Stafford who suffered a sprained ankle on Sunday will be ruled out for a few weeks but Curtin, Casserly, and McKey are all expected to return for Sunday’s clash. Season tickets will be available on the gate and all accompanied children will be admitted free. Kick off is at 2pm.
