Galway WFC face a tough league opener to UCD

Galway WFC begin their 2014/15 FAI Women’s National League season away to UCD Waves this Sunday in Dublin.

Galway manager Don O’Riordan has bolstered his squad in the close season, signing Limerick trio Marie Curtin, Megan Kelleher and Claudia Hunder.

Senior Irish international Curtin brings vast experience, having played in Norway and the USA, while 17-year-old underage international Kelleher joins from Cork side College Corinthians. Hunder has transferred from League and Cup double winners Kilmallock United.

UCD Waves have also recruited over the close season - securing the services of former Peamount manager Eileen Gleeson, who has managed to bring with her a number of Irish senior internationals. In addition they also signed Galway WFC’s top scorer from last season, Sinead Taylor, and she is expected to line out against her former teammates on Sunday.

Galway manager O’Riordan says the season opener should be an “interesting game”.

“I know Eileen well from the classroom as we are both currently on the same UEFA Pro Licence course. UCD Waves are one of the favourites for the league this season, but we will look to give them a good game.”

Meanwhile Galway WFC have been handed a tough FAI Cup quarter-final. Their opponents are League champions Raheny United who have returned from Romania where they topped their Champions League qualifying group with maximum points. They are now through to the last 32 in Europe.

The FAI game will be played on the week ending September 7.
