Family history events in Galway during Heritage Week

Two free events taking place in Galway next week as part of Heritage Week will give participants the opportunity to learn more about researching their family history.

The Western Family History Association will hold an open afternoon in Lackagh Parish Centre, beside Lackagh Church, on Saturday August 23 between 2pm and 5.30pm.

This event will be of interest to anyone starting to research their family history.

Members of the association, as well as representatives of the East Galway Family History Society and West Galway Family History Society, will be on hand to offer advice on getting started and how to progress your search for information on your ancestors.

Family tree

Galway Family History Society West will host a lecture on family history in St Joseph’s Community Centre, Ashe Road, Shantalla, on Monday August 25 from 2pm to 3pm.

This talk by Gráinne Melia will focus on the main family history resources such as census, church, civil, and land records.

While it is mainly focused on western County Galway records, she will also talk about the two genealogy centres based in Galway and others throughout the country, and the online system www.rootsireland.ie

This will be followed by a case study by Clare Horgan who will talk about her experiences of researching her family tree and how she compiled it.
