•All-Ireland Schools’ Cup semi-finals: U-16 A Girls, Calasanctius Oranmore were pipped 50 -49 by St Joseph’s Abbeyfeale, despite taking an early lead. Calasanctius struggled with the size of the Tipperary girls and were down by six at half time, but started to get the better of Abbeyfeale under the basket. Ciara Newell’s shooting brought the Oranmore side within touching distance, but Abbeyfeale just held out.
•U-19 A Girls: Calasanctius Oranmore were comfortable 90-54 winners over Holy Faith Clontarf. A total of 19 three-pointers were scored, 12 of them from the Galway girls. Three Calasanctius players scored over 20 points (C McCarthy 25, C Newell 22, C.Foley 21 ). Calasanctius will now play Mercy Waterford in the final on January 28.
•U-16 A Boys: St Malachy’s Belfast overcame St Joseph’s, Galway, 44-29. The Bish had a tough task against a strong Belfast side that already reached the u-19 final. The Bish were well down at half time and there was no way back, although they played much better in the second half.
•Galway Senior League: The senior leagues resume this week after the Christmas break. Moycullen remain the only unbeaten team in the ladies division, while Titans 1 and NUIG 1 have only one defeat each. They are playing each other this week in what is a very important match to keep up with Moycullen. In the men’s division one, Maree is the only undefeated team, while Maree u-20s have only lost one game. They had a very tight match in the early part of the season, and both teams will be looking to win it out. In the men’s division two, Titans Frontdoor and Na Gael both have one loss and will be looking to continue their good form into the New Year.
