With the deadline for entry into the Great Ethiopian Run/Walk 2014 fast approaching, Ronan Scully of Gorta-Self Help Africa is calling on Galway people to sign up for this epic fundraising adventure.
Gorta-Self Help Africa is making its final call for challenging adventure seekers to join it on the trip to one of Africa’s most magical destinations.
Mr Scully, business development representative with Gorta Self Help Africa, who is also well known for his participation in RTE’s Operation Transformation, is looking for volunteers to join the Irish charity at this year’s Great Ethiopian Run/Walk through the heart of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, in late November.
Mr Scully has already signed up more than a dozen Irish competitors to join him in the trip, which will also include a field visit to see some of the rural development projects that Gorta Self Help Africa has been implementing in the Horn of Africa for the past 30 years.
A number of places are left on the week-long expedition, for which competitors must raise at least €3,000 in sponsorship support. This sum covers all of the costs of travel, accommodation, and entry fee to the 10km Great Ethiopian Run/Walk, and will also contribute valuable funds to support the development projects that the Irish-based charity is implementing in the country.
“It’s a fantastic opportunity for people to travel to a part of the world that they might not otherwise ever get to see, and also do some good for the people of the country at the same time,” said Mr Scully, who has a special connection to Ethiopia.
“I worked there for a number of years in the past, and in more recent times my wife and I have adopted two little girls, who are the joy of my life, from Ethiopia,” he explained. “It’s a very special place indeed, and I could not speak highly enough about a trip like this one.”
Gorta Self Help Africa is an Irish based agricultural development charity comprising a merger of Gorta, and Self Help Africa, which was founded in the immediate aftermath of the terrible Ethiopian famine in the mid-1980s. “Our objective is to improve the lives of rural poor people so that they can grow more, and earn more, from their land,” the charity campaigner added.
