Tuam fibre broadband services receives €11 million investment

Homes and businesses in the Tuam area are to benefit from a €11 million investment by Eircom Wholesale to provide high-speed fibre broadband with speeds of up to 100mb/s.

The investment is part of a €400 million investment programme to upgrade Eircom Wholesale’s national Open Access telecommunications network throughout the country by 2016.

In Tuam 2,775 homes and businesses have been empowered with next generation broadband joining areas like Oranmore, Loughrea, Ballinasloe, Mervue, and Shantalla which have a total of 36,125 premises able to benefit from high-speed broadband in the county. The ongoing investment programme will see a further 23,875 locations in Galway (including Athenry on August 6 ) availing of Eircom Wholesale’s high-speed Open Access Network.

There is 10km of new fibre laid in Tuam which means that 13 cabinets are already live at Dublin Road; Corcoran’s Estate, Milltown Road; Newtown Morris; Parkmore Estate; Woodfield Estate, Galway Road; Meadow Grove; N17 Business Park; Cluid, The Glebe; Industrial Park, Airglooney; Palace Fields; Clochran Estate; Country Meadows; Tir an Choir, Vicarschoral; Lissadyra; Cois na hAbhainn, Ballygaddy and MG Business Park. There is an additional cabinet in planning covering the Market Square area (junction of High Street and Shop Street ). Once complete more than 3,600 homes and businesses in the town will have access to the superfast Open Access Network.

In Loughrea 10km of new fibre has been installed connecting ten broadband cabinets at: Hazelwood; Bridge Street / Bohewee Junction; An Chrannog, Galway Road; Athenry Road; Bullaun; Droim na Cille; Baunoge; Retail Park; Carraig Mor; and Cosmona. In Oughterard 2km of new fibre has also been installed connecting broadband cabinets at: Bridge Street; Kilcummin Fields; and Weightbridge Park, Camp Street.

Regarding the benefit to Tuam and other towns, Carolan Lennon, managing director of Eircom Wholesale, said: “We know from towns already live on the network that the availability of high-speed broadband is crucial for local businesses which want to transact online, for schools to transform the teaching and learning experience for students in the classroom and at home, to facilitate greater home working and a much broader range of entertainment options through new video on-demand and online TV services.”
