Galwegian to be commemorated at hunger strike event

A County Galway man, Tony D’Arcy, will be among the Republicans commemorated at the National Hunger Strike commemoration in Derrylin, Fermanagh, this Sunday.

Tony D’Arcy, from Headford, was OC of the Western Command of the IRA in the 1930s. He died on April 16 1940 after 53 days on hunger strike in St Bricin’s Military Hospital, Dublin.

“It is of huge importance that we commemorate all of those who lost their lives on hunger strike, be that in 1917, 1940 or 1981,” said Sinn Fein MP Michelle Gildernew. “I would encourage people from across Galway to travel to Derrylin and attend what should be an enjoyable weekend of commemoration and education.”
