Seven gold medals for Galway at National Track and Field Championships

Galway athletes won a total of seven medals at the National Championships in Santry last weekend, including two gold medal winning performances and national titles for Sean Breathnach and Cathriona Farrell.

King of the throws, Sean Breathnach of GCH, won an incredible four medals over the two days of competition. He won gold and a superb sixth national shot putt title with a best throw of 16.27 metres in his first event of the weekend. Breathnach also took silver in the weight for distance event with 7.78 metres and two bronzes - in the discus throwing 45.86m, and the weight for height event with 3.50m.

Cathriona Farrell, of Craughwell AC, added a third national high jump title to her rapidly growing collection with a best height of 1.75m to take victory. Athenry’s Sinead Touhy placed fifth in the event. Sarah Finnegan of Craughwell placed sixth in the triple jump.

Craughwell AC’s Jamie Fallon won silver in the Junior 3,000m with an excellent time of 8.44, with his clubmate Damien O Boyle taking bronze in third place.

GCH athletes Alanna Lally and Keith Fallon both made their respective 800m finals, with Lally finishing fifth and Fallon 10th with a new personal best of 1.52.

East Galway AC 5k and 8k

East Galway AC club had more than 200 running the 8k and 5k events held in Castleblakeney on Sunday last, in aid of UHG Oncology department.

Philip Niland of Celbridge AC took victory in the 8km in 28.18, ahead of Athenry AC’s Ray Somers. First lady home was Sinead Brody of GCh in 32.19. Athenry AC athlete Tomasz Kadzielawski took the win in the 5k in a time of 18.39.
