New play gets public reading today

A Boy Called Nedd @ Galway International Arts Festival

A BOY Called Nedd, a new play by Emily Gillmor Murphy, will be given a public reading by NUI Galway drama students in the Druid theatre this afternoon.

The reading, which will be given by Deirdre Ní Chloscaí, Muireann Ní Raghallaigh, Joe Power, and Niamh Ryan, is part of the Galway International Arts Festival’s First Thought series.

A Boy Called Nedd is about a 16-year-old boy trying to stay on course after his brother’s suicide. A relationship goes from awkward silences, to making out, to throwing insults; a bit of ill-advised behaviour is captured on video, uploaded to the internet and goes viral; and then he finds that guns are only a text or a mouse-click away. So when, or will, Nedd stop confusing grief with the need for revenge?

Patrick Lonergan, NUIG’s professor of drama and theatre said the reading will be a major opportunity for the students.

“This event gives our students the chance to perform in a professional setting, working with a very exciting new writer, in a major theatre company, in Ireland’s major arts festival,” he said. “As part of our continuing work with the Druid Academy, our students will continue to work closely with Druid on projects such as this.”

The reading takes place in the Mick Lally Theatre, Druid Lane, today at 2pm. The theatre will also host a reading of Helen and I by Meadhbh McHugh on Friday July 25. Both readings start at 2pm and admission to either readings is €7. See www.giaf.com
