Galway has a new world champion after powerlifter Ayshea Ullah O’Toole took gold at the World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation World Championships in Dusseldorf.
The Galway woman, who trains with Crossfit Galway in Oranmore, not only took first place in both lifts in her weight class making her World Champion, but also broke both World Drug Free Powerlifting Federation records with a 140kg squat and an amazing 190.5kg deadlift.
And colleague Aisling Ward was placed third in her category with an impressive dead lift of 140kg.
Both women only started powerlifting in October of last year but have fallen in love with the sport.
O’Toole, who is a mother of three, practiced taekwondo with Galway Taekwondo School, while Ward, from BallyMacward, has five All Ireland club medals under her belt with Padraig Pearse's GAA club.
Both women started Crossfit last year with a view to trying something new that was competitive and challenging.
