Galway teacher to work in Tanzania as part of overseas teaching scheme

Selected from more than 100 entries, Galway secondary school teacher Laoise Martin is one of 10 benefactors of the Folens Overseas Teaching Fund which finances Irish teachers on charitable trips during summer.

Laoise Martin is a teacher at the Salerno Secondary School in Salthill, and will travel to Tanzania this summer through her chosen charity, Tanzania Volunteer Experience.

Running for the first year, the Folens Overseas Teaching Fund of €10,000 saw more than 100 primary and post-primary teachers apply for the fund, with 10 winners selected.

Suzy O’Keefe, marketing manager at Folens, said: “Laoise and the other winning applicants showed an extraordinary commitment to the teaching profession and a desire to see a high standard of education afforded to all children across the globe, a vision we are committed to at Folens. Teachers are the lifeblood of our organisation, and this initiative allowed us to give something back by supporting them to continue their work in schools in developing countries.”
