THE ALTERED Hours, Nanu Nanu, Myles Manley, and My Fellow Sponges are among the bands that will be playing the Galway Fringe Festival which opens this Saturday.
The festival mainstage will be in The Victoria Hotel, Queen Street, and psychedelic band The Altered Hours play there on Thursday July 17.
The Altered Hours (pictured above ) live shows are known for their intensity. Their last EP was released on A Records, also home to The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Dirty Beaches and Magic Castles. Support is from the excellent alternative-rock band Boyfights, Tuam’s brilliant pop-punksters Oh Boland, and Tuam songwriting genius Brain Kelly.
Other mainstage shows include Dublin folk/ electronic duo Carriages who play this Sunday with support from Galway folk act Rivers and Crows; Nanu Nanu, the ‘alien pop duo’ featuring Galway-born songwriter Laura Sheeran on vocals, bring their dark electro/techno to the mainstage on Tuesday 22; while acclaimed songwriter Myles Manley plays on Wednesday 23.
Some of the best local talent will also play the festival, with shows at the Fringe mainstage from indie band The Hardcore Priests of Yemen (Saturday 19 ); My Fellow Sponges (July 15 ); Mikey & The Scallywags (July 24 ); baroque-pop band Canaries (July 26 ); while the Athenry Music School Guitar Orchestra play St Augustine’s Church on July 18.
Other highlights include the Irish Beatbox Championships (July 26 ); the Fringe Fiddle Festival (July 19 ); and former In Tua Nua member Paul Byrne and his seven piece band at The Victoria Hotel (July 25 ).
Pádraig’s Place will host the Fringe Folk Club during the festival and will feature performances from baritone singer Denis McArdle (July 15 ); trad group Roudledum (July 18 ); and world music showcase Saudade, featuring Connemara artist Ciara Conway (July 14 ).
Other notable Fringe Festival gigs include Fia Rua’s album launch in Áras na nGael on July 26, and American songwriters Felix Sonnyboy and Cal Folger Day playing the Citóg night in The Cellar Bar on July 16 and 23 respectively.
