Cancer Care West’s recent fundraiser “Road to Inis Aoibhinn” has been singled out for an award.
At the All Ireland Fundraising Awards in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, the local cancer charity won the best regional fundraising event for its Donegal to Galway cycle.
The awards are given specifically for fundraisers by fundraisers and are a key component to champion best practice in fundraising and to celebrate fundraisers’ hard work and successes across the year.
The winning event ‘Road to Inis Aoibhinn’ was held over May 30/31 and helped raise almost €50,000 for the west of Ireland cancer charity, attracting more than 40 participants.
Sharon Fitzpatrick, fundraising manager of Cancer Care West, said the award was for the hard work and dedication of organisers, supporters and participants.
“We are thrilled to be announced as the winners of the Best Regional Fundraising Event. Events such as this greatly assist Cancer Care West in raising funds so that we can continue to provide accommodation and support services to cancer patients and their families free of charge.”
The cyclists tackled the 280 kilometre route from Letterkenny through Donegal, Sligo and Claremorris to Galway to raise funds for Inis Aoibhinn - Cancer Care West’s residential facility in Galway. The route was chosen because more than 70 per cent of cancer patients staying at Inis Aoibhinn come from the Mayo, Donegal and Sligo area. It is hoped to continue the cycle in future years.
Inis Aoibhinn provides a ‘home away from home’ environment for patients who are travelling to Galway for radiotherapy treatment at University Hospital Galway. This allows patients to have family support during their treatment without the burden of the cost of this facility.
