TED HUGHES, the English poet regarded as one of the greatest of the post-war era, will be celebrated at an event in County Galway.
The second Ted Hughes Weekend runs from Friday July 11 to Sunday 13 at Doonreagan, Cashel, Connemara, where Hughes lived and worked for a period in the 1960s.
The poet, who had Irish connections, regarded his time in Galway as “a breakthrough” in his writing and his personal life. In letters to friends he refers to the “good flow of inspiration” he experienced in Connemara, resulting in some of his finest work.
The theme of this year’s event will be ‘Ted Hughes and the countryside’. Among the speakers are Prof Terry Gifford, Alicante and Bath Spa universities; Prof Neil Roberts, University of Sheffield; Prof Gerald Dawe and Dr Gillian Groszewski, TCD; Dr Mark Wormald, director of studies at Pembroke College, Cambridge, Hughes’ Alma Mater. There will also be a poetry reading by Harry Clifton, former Ireland Professor of Poetry.
