The sun shone and the crowds came out for the Galway Simon Kick Assphalt Race on Sunday.
Some were taking part in a timed run for the first time, others were running for a cause, while one American couple, on their honeymoon, decided to incorporate the run into their holiday and were running together in a 10k for the first time.
In all some 1200 runners lined up for the 10k and 10 mile runs along Galway Bay on a flat route that produced fast times.
Dariusz Monkiewicz clocked a time of 36.16 to win the 10k with Sean Healy coming in a close second at 36.33. The first female across the line for the 10k was Sinead Brody in 40.44.
The winner of the 10 mile route was Gary Thornton in 57.24, with Jane Ann Healy coming in at 1.05.36 in the women’s event.
The event, managed by a team of 100 volunteers, was in aid of Galway Simon Community for men, women and families who are homeless or at risk of homelessness in the west of Ireland.
