Galway camogie hopes of kicking off the defence of their All Ireland title on a positive note floundered in Athenry on Sunday.
Old rivals Wexford defeated the All Ireland champions by 2-12 to 1-11 in the opening game of the 2014 Liberty Insurance Senior Camogie Championship.
Midfielders Shelly Kehoe and Josie Dwyer led at the Wexford assault, and with Ursula Jacob in scoring form up front and goalkeeper deflecting
Niamh McGrath’s penalty over the crossbar, the visitors enjoyed a half-time lead. They continued with a Fiona Rochford goal before Galway levelled when Brenda Hanney supplied Orlaith McGrath who struck for a goal.
However D’Arcy was the hero for Wexford, saving a Hanney goal-bound effort, before Kate Kelly struck in injury time to seal the victory.
