Galway is set to become a ‘floral city’ under a new partnership between Salthill and city businesses and the Galway City Council.
Along with the floral displays erected by the council’s parks department in Eyre Square, The Claddagh, Spanish Arch, and the roundabouts, city businesses have also sponsored planted boxes for the city and Salthill, while grants have been given to businesses, which has resulted in more than 150 additional floral boxes being displayed.
Merchants Road has 20 boxes with trees and summer plants. These will be replaced in the winter with winter flowers. Labour city councillor Niall McNelis has welcomed the development. “With the new bus parking on Merchants Road it gives a good first impression to the area,” he said.
In a related development, the Galway City Tidy Towns is working with Madden Nurseries to have all 32 counties represented along the prom with the colours of each county displayed on flag poles and in the flower boxes.
