New defibrillator for Knocknacarra

The Knocknacarra Community Defibrillator Group launched the new community defibrillator for the Knocknacarra area on Monday.

The long term project was made possible with the support of the people of Knocknacarra and the support of local businesses including Tom Sheridan's Bar & Restaurant, Leo Walsh Pharmacy, Davitts Photography, Dunnes Stores, Anne Flaherty, B & Q, O’Connor’s Dry Cleaners, O’Connor’s Famous Pub, Ronan Scully, and Mayor Lyons. The KCDG offers its sincere thanks also to all who supported the table quiz.

The committee members said they were “confident that many lives can be saved as a result of this new initiative and service”.

The new defibrillator will be available 24 hours a day seven days a week in The Clybaun Hotel in the centre of the Knocknacarra area. If a situation arises, the defibrillator will be immediately available to assist in keeping a patient alive while the emergency services and the ambulance services are summoned.

The committee members said they were all aware of the “golden hour” when a cardiac arrest takes place. In the event of a person suffering a cardiac arrest and losing consciousness, they said it was comforting to know a defibrillator service might be available at close hand.
