Athletes and volunteers from Team Connacht during the parade at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics Ireland Games in Limerick.
Over the course of three days of the games, some 2,200 medals were handed out to athletes, representing the four corners of Ireland. A total of 1060 gold, 676 silver, and 464 bronze medals were awarded. Athletes competed in 13 sports; athletics, aquatics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, kayaking, pitch and putt, and table tennis.
More than 3,000 volunteers, 600 coaches, and thousands of spectators supported the athletes in venues at the University of Limerick and other official Games venues across the city.
The selection process for the Irish contingent for the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2015 in Los Angeles will now take place in August, open to all eligible athletes who competed in the 2014 games with more than 100 places up for grabs on Team Ireland.
