Sunflowers continue charity work in Belarus

Volunteers from the Sunflowers Chernobyl Appeal children’s charity have returned from Belarus, where they were involved in rebuilding and renovating a derelict house belonging to the Bogushevsk orphanage.

During the 10-day trip, volunteers of the Galway-based charity transformed the dilapidated building into a third Sunflowers for special needs orphans. Floors, ceilings, sewage system, and doors were all replaced, and a central heating system was added.

The Sunflower project gives special needs orphans a chance to receive training to prepare them for a life outside an institution.

The charity will be holding a fundraising event, a 6k fun run, on Sunday July 13 in Aughrim village at 11am. Registration of €10 per adult begins at 9.30am in the Battle of Aughrim visitor centre, and there will also be a free children’s race at 10.15am in the park.

Post-race refreshments will be available. Children from the Bogushevsk orphanage who are staying in Ireland will be there to say hello. For more information call Pat Dillon on 087 4172307 or Kitty Cahill on 086 0876265, or visit www.chernobylchildren.ie
