MORE THAN 100 events will take place during the Galway’s Fringe Festival which runs from July 12 to 28, including a new play by Mick Donnellan, author of Gun Metal Grey.
This year’s fringe will feature five dance companies, 20 theatre productions, visual arts, comedy, children’s events, puppetry, craft, photography, storytelling, workshops, and Irish language events
Theatre
Mick Donnellan’s Radio Luxembourg runs at the Galway Playhouse, Columban Hall, Sea Road from July 12 to 17 at 8pm. The play is a black comedy centring on two Irish ceremonials involved in a Tiger Kidnapping that goes terribly wrong.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s play The Grand Inquisitor imagines Jesus Christ returning to earth during the Inquisition in Spain. This classic exploration of philosophical, political, religious, and ethical questions runs from July 21 to 25 at 1pm in The Hall, Busker Browns.
Aindrias de Staic, the comedian, actor, musician, and presenter of TG4’s Jig Gig will present his new show The Man From Moogaga at Padriac’s Place (July 21 to 27, 8pm ). Football, music, and mayhem collide in this comic tale of jigs, reels, and growing up in rural west of Ireland.
Dance highlights include The Tale Of The Ancient Lights from July 18 to 20 at 9pm at the Galway Playhouse. This solo dance piece by Ruichi combines circus, dance and magic on a modern journey through an ancient Asian land.
Shadowplay by Katarzyna Voetter and Genevieve Ryan (July 22 to 24, 6pm, Galway Playhouse ) is a modern contemporary dance duet featuring two Galway based artists performing a range of dance styles.
Music
Paul Byrne, a former member of In Tua Nua, has just released his debut solo album Cruel and Tender Ways and he will play the Galway Fringe Festival Main stage at the Victoria Hotel on July 25 at 10pm.
Athenry Music School Guitar Orchestra will perform a repertoire composed specifically for the ensemble by the directors of Athenry Music School in the Augustinian Church on July 18 at 2pm.
Alice’s Revenge, a cabaret, will take place on the 14th July at 9.30pm at Monroe’s Live venue starring Shir Madness and friends.
Other events
The literature section of the fringe includes Airnéal Na Cóiribe (July 19, 7.30pm, Áras Na Gael, Dominic Street ) featuring celebrated Gaeltacht musicians, writers, actors, and singers performing as Gaeilge agus as Bearla.
The Poetry Sessions/Seisiúin Filíochta runs from July 14 to 19st at 3pm at the Wrens Nest, Padriac’s Place and will feature Paul Bradley, Gráinne Ní Fhoighil, Fred Johnston, Sean Ó Coistealbha, and Emily Cullen.
The renowned sculptor John Behan will open the festival visual art exhibition at the Galway Fringe Festival Gallery, Dominican Hall, July 11 at 6pm.
