Traffic calming measures must be installed at schools in Clifden and Letterfrack before there is a fatality, according to the North Connemara Action Group.
The group is calling on Galway County Council and the National Roads Authority to install the traffic calming measures at Scoil Mhuire national school in Clifden, located on the N59 junction to the Clifden District Hospital. According to group chairman, Liam Bartley Allen, traffic calming is also needed at Letterfrack National School which is located at a “deadly corner”.
“The parents feel it is only a matter of time before there is a fatality. The authorities won’t do anything about this until there is a fatality and this is unacceptable. This situation is also putting pressure on our already limited Garda force which have been present numerous times,” said Mr Allen, who added that this problem is all over Connemara and not just the schools.
Mr Allen has been informed that residents of Tullyvoheen Estate in Clifden are constantly ringing the Galway County Council about speed ramps, double yellow lines, yield signs, and children at play signs. “We are talking about people’s lives here. Surely it is not a hard thing to ask for?” said Mr Allen.
