National Carers’ Week held to celebrate family carers

To celebrate Ireland’s family carers, Carers’ Week is being held from Monday June 9 to Sunday June 15 with events in Galway city, Loughrea, and Athenry.

On Saturday June 7, the Loughrea Library will host an evening celebrating the work of W B Yeats and composer Turlough O’Carolan with Tale of the Gael. Artwork by the Yeats family will also be on display, with a wine reception at 8pm. There is a discounted admission rate of €5 for all family carers.

On Monday June 9, to launch National Carers’ Week, a health fair will take place from 10am to 2pm in the Meadow Court Hotel, Loughrea. Admission is free for all family carers.

On Thursday June 12, a mini spa day with hair and beauty treatments will take place in the Harbour Hotel, Galway city, from 10am to 2pm , with admission being free for all family carers.

On Saturday June 14, all family carers are invited to a night at the Galway Greyhound Stadium, with some great prizes on the night. There is a discounted rate of €10 for all family carers to include admission to the stadium, a race card, and finger food.

During the week, from Monday to Sunday, there will be free entry for carers to Athenry Castle; Aughnanure Castle, Oughterard; Portumna Castle and Gardens; and a discounted rate of €8 for all family carers through the week for entry to Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Garden.

The Carers’ Association is Ireland’s national charity for family carers in the home, and provides emotional and practical support for these families, by promoting carers invaluable contribution to Irish society.
