Erris Festival of Words to take place next month

Aras Inis Gluaire, the Arts Centre for Erris, is initiating an exciting new festival of literature in 2014, this will follow the great tradition of the former Force 12 festival.

Set in Belmullet, the beautiful barony of Erris in northwest Mayo, an area rich in history and oral tradition.

The theme for the festival is culture and commemoration. There will be lectures, readings, workshops, and debate from the esteemed likes of John Banville, Donal Ryan, Eimear O’Connor, Miceal O’Conghaile, Michael Harding, Tommy Tiernan, John Waters, Rosita Boland, Carol Hunt of the Sunday Independent and twice recipient of Foreign Reporter of the year, Ed Vulliamy of The Guardian. Music and song will also be to the fore and the festival will present ballads of some literary giants like Yeats and Kavanagh.

The festival will also be commemorating the anniversaries of Behan and of the publication of Joyce’s Dubliners with a production of the highly acclaimed Dubliners Dilemma by Declan Gorman.

Not forgetting Mayo talent with Mike McCormack, Colette NicAodh, Martin Dyar Terry McDonagh, Ailbhe Ni Ghearbhuigh, Sean O Coisdealbha, and Aifric MacAodha all taking part.

Creative writing groups from Mayo, Galway, and Dublin will offer a selection of their work. The event will take place from Friday June 6 until Sunday June 8.
