WILLY VLAUTIN of The Richmond Fontaine and Jenny Conlee of The Decemberists have joined forces as The Delines, whose Irish tour next month takes in Galway.
The Delines play the Róisín Dubh on Saturday June 7 at 8pm where they will play songs from their new album Colfax (Decor Records/El Cortez Records ), which Uncut declared to be “the richest collection of songs Vlautin has written”, while Q praised its “evocative country-noir vignettes”.
The band are - Vlautin (guitar, songwriter ); Conlee (keyboards ); along with Richmond Fontaine’s Sean Oldham (drums ); The Damnations’ Amy Boone (vocals/piano ), and The Minus 5’s Tucker Jackson (pedal steel ), and Freddy Trujillo (bass ).
“We were playing a nice venue somewhere and it was written across the kick drum,” Willy Vlautin says of the band’s name and how the project came together. “The idea for the band itself came long before on a tour with Richmond Fontaine. Amy was singing the female roles from The High Country and Post to Wire, originally sung by her sister Deborah. Backstage Amy would sing soul and opera numbers to warm up and get her mind off the psycho logger tunes and a-holes she was locked in a van with.”
Those soul influences started to creep into Willy’s country-rock songwriting and he wrote a number of songs he hoped Amy would sing. She agreed, and Willy, Amy, and Sean recorded the new pieces. Impressed, the other, soon to be, Delines members contributed music to the songs, which eventually became Colfax.
