Three Galway businesses voted the most youth friendly, An Tobar Nua, Lucks Newsagents and Deli, and Casey’s Centra, were the winners of this year’s Youth-Friendly Business Awards.
Now in its second year and organised by Galway City Comhairle, the event’s winners received their awards from deputy mayor Peter Keane and members of Comhairle na nÓg at a ceremony in City Hall.
The idea for the awards followed consultation with young people who had reported being negatively stereotyped and treated unfairly in shops in the city. It is hoped the awards reward those shops that fulfil a number of criteria, such as being youth friendly, welcoming, giving fair treatment and overall respect for young people, and will encourage other shops to provide a better service to young people. One other significant finding from the survey was the importance for having a seated area on the premises to accommodate young people to eat their lunch.
The committee is now looking at the provision of activities and youth facilities for young people in the city - which, along with mental health, was the major issue raised at last year’s annual general meeting.
As a result the committee is planning an open day for any organisations or services for young people in Galway to attend and is expected to take place in October.
