Joint initiative for Meals on Wheels launched in Galway

Monday May 19 sees the launch of an initiative between Galway University Hospital and COPE Galway Meals on Wheels which aims to raise awareness of under-nutrition in older patients and increase awareness of the benefits of Meals on Wheels in Galway and Mayo.

This joint initiative will see staff on three wards, St Rita’s (acute stroke and older person unit ), Unit 4 (rehabilitation unit ), and St Pius (surgical and urology ward ), refer older patients in need of nutritional support to Meals on Wheels through Community Catering Meals on Wheels. In Mayo a similar service will be coordinated by Castlebar Social Services.

“We have had a great response from the county Meals on Wheels providers, and if there are any providers out there that we haven’t reached yet please get in touch as it’s essential that we have all parts of the county covered so that any older person leaving the hospital can be supported by their own community Meals on Wheels service,” said Anne Kenny of COPE Galway.

For more information on this initiative contact Anne Kenny of COPE Galway Community Catering Meals on Wheels on (091 ) 700800 or Edel Mannion of GUH on (091 ) 542134.
