BadBadNotGood - hop-hop/jazz freak out

A JAZZ trio, but not as we know it, one which takes in =hip-hop and reimagines both that and jazz into new sounding forms - this is BadBadNotGood.

BadBadNotGood - Matthew Tavares (keys ), Chester Hansen (bass ), Alex Sowinski (drums ) - play Strange Brew at the Róisín Dubh on Thursday May 22 at 9pm.

The trio were students of the jazz programme in Toronto’s Humber College, and came together through a shared love of hip-hop.

From there, they have challenged the perceived boundaries of contemporary jazz and improvised music, through collaborations with rapper Tyler The Creator, r’n’b/pop songwriter Frank Ocean, Bootsy Collins, and RZA, as well as their interpretations of songs by My Bloody Valentine and Kanye West, and unusual stage attire - Alex Sowinski is sometimes known to wear a pig mask while playing.

Prefix magazine called the band “strange, forever imaginative, and ultimately revolutionary hip-hop and electronic beatmakers”. The Huffington Post praised the group for “understanding how to work crescendos by stretching out and reshaping the music into their own vision of silky smooth key progressions, pounding drums, and tasty bass lines.”

The start of May saw the band release their third album III, which enjoyed positive reviews.

“This album,” said Alex Sowinski, “is the sum of all the experiences and growth we’ve had over the past couple of years, touring everywhere, playing with all kinds of brilliant people, learning from everything that’s happened, and honing in on this knowledge to make something truly special.”
